Looking for a web hosting package is a great but delicate decision because choosing wisely will make your website great while you suffer bad consequences if you choose the opposite.

To choose wisely, you will need to carefully observe and identify the basic features of the web hosting.

Don’t worry, I will let you decide wisely on the type of web hosting package you should go for. So, let take a look at some of the basic features of a good web hosting service provider should offer:

8 Basic Features of Web Hosting You Need to Know

  1. DOMAINS: Make you know how many domain names you can point to your hosting account. If you are the type that run a big company or website, there is pretty possibility that you will need many websites either as independent domain names or subdomains.

Note that, if you are going to point multiple domains to a single hosting account, each one of them will have separate SSL certificate, admin or business emails and so on.

But whatever it is, check out how many domains does a hosting package allowed and compare to other web hosting companies before you can fully agree that it’s CHEAP.

2. DISK SPACE: This is just like your SD or Memory card on your smartphone. You can’t put 2GB files on 1GB SD card, same things applies to web hosting. Before you go for any hosting package, make sure such hosting has enough disk space which can hold everything you need to upload on your server.

For Instance, if you want to start a music or video streaming website, you must have unlimited DISK SPACE or you can go for VPS hosting packages.

Because files like music, video, apps and software tends to consume more spaces than texts, images or word documents.

3. DATABASES: Is an organized collection of data, stored and accessed electronically. Database processes workloads to create and update themselves, querying the data they contain and running application against it.

Before you choose any web hosting package, you must make sure that it allows different website software you can successfully run on your hosting account.

For instance, in Namecheap Hosting Packages and server, there are different software or apps such as WordPress, Joomla and some other apps which you will need.

Also, there is SQL which can serve as the back end of your website.

Make sure your hosting account has enough databases needed for your business website or blog.

4. BANDWIDTH: This is also very important and you must take note of this before you opt for a web hosting company.

Bandwidth is refers to the quantity or amount of web traffic that’s allowed to access or leave your website or blog. This means the amount of people that visits and leaves your websites every second, hour, day, week or month.

Before a visitor leaves your website, he/she must have received a lot of data from your website either it is image viewing, listening to audio or podcast, downloading files such as music, video, pdfs, apps or taking an action on the website.

If you are going to be using many images, big files (such as music, pdfs, videos or apps), you will need very enough bandwidth or else your website will suddenly shut down due to heavy traffic which your server can’t hold.

5. FTP: This is an acronym for ‘File Transfer Protocol’. It’s the protocol for transferring your website files from your computer to web hosting server or vice versa.

This makes it possible for you to upload your files such as theme, images and other files mentioned under Bandwidth above or other finished website files from your computer to your computer and to your service provider’s server.

It also allows you to download or backup any files from your server to your computer.

So, before you buy a hosting package from a hosting company, make sure it provides 24/7 unrestricted FTP access.

6. TECHNICAL & HOSTING SUPPORT: Whenever you want to buy a package from a hosting company, make sure such company has reliable customer care support.

A good web hosting company should have an easy way their customers can contact them easy and they should be able to provide solution to their web hosting technical problems.

I sincerely commend Namecheap Hosting Company in this aspect because, their customer care support are ready to help 24/7. They are experts, friendly and reply very fast especially when I use their live chat section.

A good web hosting company should offer professional and 24/7 customer care support.

7. EMAIL: This is a very important factor to consider when aiming to buy a hosting package from any company.

A good web hosting should offer some amount of business emails which you can setup for your website for professional and branding sake. Imagine if a giant company or brand is using an email address like ‘’. Does that shows professionalism?

NO! Although, most people didn’t take this important but you must take it very important either you are a startup or established entrepreneur.

The web hosting package you want to buy should be able to offer different custom email addresses such as ‘admin@companyname(dot)com’, ‘support@companyname(dot)com and so on.

For instance, on my Namecheap Stellar Business Hosting package, I’m allowed to setup 30 different custom or business email addresses for my domain name or website.

8. SUB-DOMAIN: I’m pretty sure you know the differences between ‘domain’ and ‘sub-domain’? You bought or mapped a single domain name for your website such as ‘’.

But also, a web hosting package you want to buy should be able to offer you some numbers of sub-domains.

If you need a new website or blog section for your website, you don’t need to buy a new domain again. You can easily map a sub-domain to your existing website.

For instance, if your website address is, and you need a marketing website or webpage for the website, you don’t need to buy a new domain name but simply register a sub-domain to the existing website.

i.e or

E.g in ‘’ ‘Marketingis a ‘subdomain’ while ‘’ is the main website name.

This feature will be very helpful to you in the future. You should look out for it whenever you want to buy any web hosting package.
