When it comes to SEO, WordPress (or Woocommerce) is far better than Shopify!

Because, you own everything on Woocommerce including the domain, hosting, contents and everything. This makes it pretty easy to optimize and rank your WordPress website or Ecommerce platform easily.

But on Shopify, you are not the full owner of your ecommerce website because you built everything on Shopify main server instead of yours. By using shopify, you are going to be giving them both credits and glories as long as you are still there.

Shopify SEO Tips: 10 Ways to Increase Your Shopify Traffic from Search Engines

Here are the SEO tips you need to optimize your Shopify website for SEO and even rank above your competitors but we are going to discuss this in two categories:

Shopify Onpage SEO Tips

1. Choose a good domain name

Unlike Woocommerce, you only need to buy domain name and map to your Shopify store (hosting).

Here is the big deal;

Many people outside there especially the start-ups makes mistake when it comes to choosing a domain name for their shopify store.

If you want to rank quickly, make more sales through relevant traffic, I recommend you go with a domain name that have your niche or product keywords. Forget about mimicking top brands like Amazon, Google or any other companies.

Your goal is to make more sales. If you want to build a brand, Shopify is not an option for you because, it’s strictly for selling!

So, how do you choose a perfect domain name for your shopify website?

The simple trick is for this #1 Shopify SEO tips is to have done more research about hot-selling products you want to start selling and you should be well convinced that it’s the only product (with other related ones) that you will be selling.

Let say you want to deal with selling of Jewelleries. You know that it’s what you will based on.

So, the perfect domain name for the shopify store should have the keywords ‘Jewelleries’.

  • JewelleriesMania.com
  • MyJewelleriesHub.com
  • JewelleriesForYou.com

And so on.

Here is an added tips;

If you are targeting those people within your geographical local or country, you can use a CC-TLD instead of TLD.

What do I mean?

Here is a quick explanation: CC-TLD means Country Code Top Level Domain which is a domain extension for your country. For instance, MyBusinessBlog.Co.Uk has domain extension for United Kingdom while MyBusinessBlog. In has domain extension for India.

TLD simply means Top Level Domain. Like MyBusinessBlog.com, MyLibrary.net etc., are top level domain extension and they are universal!

If you’re targeting just your country, it will be of great advantage for your shopify SEO is you choose a CC-TLD extension but, don’t get me wrong about choosing a TLD as well.

2. Activate SSL for your store

When we are talking about both security and Google Ranking Factors, installing and activating SSL on your website is very important.

SSL is also known as Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) encrypted or Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secured (HTTPS).

Before, all websites on the internet were using the HTTP which is not secured. Internet fraudsters or hacker can just hack into your website and cart away all the resources.

But thanks to SSL which makes it possible for every website owners to protect their websites from internet thieves.

Since web security is so important to visitors, Google and other search engines has made it very compulsory for all site owners to have SSL enabled in their websites.

4. Optimize Products’ Title, Description and Images for SEO

This is very important and in fact, one of the top 3 optimization measures you must practice on your shopify store.

How can you optimize both title and description for SEO?

It all started from writing an SEO friendly content related to each products you want to sell on your store.

Make sure you have a low-competition keyword you want to rank the products for. Use the keywords in the URL, Title, Description and in Images’ Alt title.

To optimize your products’ title and description for shopify SEO is not a tedious task. Read this guide about how to write an SEO friendly blog posts for details on how you can perfectly do this.

When it comes to optimizing your products’ images, you have to be serious rather than taking it so lightly.

Most people makes this mistake, thinking that images are just images. If that’s what you also think, then you have to change that right away.

There are two basic things you must always do to your shopify or website’s images. They are:

  • Compressing Images: Make sure that your image size is very small and in JPG or PNG format. You can use TinyPNG or CompressJpeg to compress your image before uploading to your shopify website.
  • Using Keywords in ALT Title: Remember I said you must have a low-competition keywords you want to rank the product for. After uploading your compressed image to your page, right click on it and put the keywords in the ALT title text area.

To optimize your product contents for SEO, you must embrace the power of interlinking.

Interlinking is simply when you are linking to another page in your website.

This is what I mean:

Let say you want to post a product about “Louis Vuitton” shoe and you have previous products about either “Louis Vuitton” or any “Shoe”, make sure you link to them.

You can link to another page when writing your product description by highlighting on the words you want readers or shoppers to click on.

After highlighting, press Ctrl + K on your keyboard and put the product or page you want to link to in the formatted text-area and save it.

Interlinking is very powerful to boost your shopify SEO score. As you can see that I also interlinked many other pages in this article.

6. Make Use of Responsive Theme and Maintain Good PageSpeed

For a successful Shopify SEO practice, you need to make sure that you are using a responsive theme.

What I mean is that, your theme must be positioned or shown well on both mobile devices (smartphones) and desktop devices (PC) irrespective of the device’s screen size.

In fact, you must make your website more mobile friendly because most internet users and online shoppers do make use of their smartphones. So, focus on making your website more responsive on mobile. You can do so by choosing a good theme.

A responsive theme will also be crystal clear, easily navigable, good fonts etc. According to my little research and choice of theme by some shopify users, they preferred a theme known as “Booster

Booster Shopify Theme is very clear, attractive and responsive on both desktop and mobile views. According to the theme developer, it will help you increase your sales because it’s well optimized for SEO.

Another thing is maintaining an impressive PageSpeed. You can use tool like GTmetrix to check your pagespeed score.

GTmetrix is an online website speed checker that will also tell you want you need to do in order to make your website optimized for search engines.

You can also practise speed optimization by compressing your images as I’ve earlier told you.

Make use of AMP for your shopify website if you noticed it’s slow or not mobile responsive. Accelerated Mobile Page (AMP) will create a very fast and neat version of your website for mobile users.

Once again, make sure your website is mobile friendly because it’s among Google’s ranking factors. You can check your pagespeed score or website friendliness using Google PageSpeed Insight.

Increase Your Shopify Ranking With Offpage SEO

We have been discussing about doing this and that for the sake of boosting your Shopify SEO but what do you noticed? Everything explained earlier will be done in your website. It’s called “Onpage SEO”.

Now, let talk about Offpage SEO. This type of SEO is very powerful and it’ll help your website rank higher on search engines while giving your more brand awareness (if it’s done well).

I’m sure you know what offpage SEO mean already? You are going to do it manually and outside your website. But how? Let talk about the steps involved:

7. Social Media Promotion + Signals:

Make sure you promote your products on social media sites as much as possible. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest etc., are there for you.

This is not just for traffic or awareness but it’s one of Google Ranking Factors. So the more your website is popular on social media pages, search engines will track and believe you are doing something meaningful and useful.

To do this more effectively, put social media sharing buttons on all your pages for readers or shoppers to share with their friends on social media.

You can also automate your website through an app or tool with your social media pages, in the sense that whenever you publish a new post, it will automatically be published in your social media pages.

This is called social signals and it must be high.

Promote your website on popular social media groups, channels and pages as much as possible. You can pay for influencers to help you as well.

8. Build Backlinks:

This is the most powerful and expensive out of all the SEO practices.

You will need to speed money to build relevant and quality backlinks to your website.

What are backlinks?

Backlinks are the links you got from another website. This is when another website is linking back to your own.

For example, if your shopify store is baggs.com and another website “chukloos.com” is having a hyperlink that leads to your own website “baggs.com”, it’s said you have gotten a backlink from another website.

There are two types of backlinks, we have “Do-follow” and “No-follow” backlinks.

Do-follow backlinks are very good and will boost your shopify SEO than “No-follow” backlinks.

Also, you must be careful when buying backlinks from other websites or blogs. Make sure the website or blog is somehow related to your niche (not really compulsory).

Another way to build backlinks is to comment in other people’s blogs or websites without spamming it. You can use <a href> HTML tag to hyperlinked website in the comment box.

Check the website Domain and Page Authority (DA and PA) as well.

High Domain and Page Authority are very important if you want to rank high on search engines. So, it will be better to get backlinks from high DA and PA websites.

To check website’s Domain and Page Authority, you can click here to use this free tools.

NOTE: We sell backlinks to websites and we’ll use the opportunity to help you review your brand, products or services to our readers. We also sell links from our previous articles. If you are interested, click here to contact us.

9. Avoid Broken Links

Have you ever tried to visit a web page before but it led you to a broken page or an error “404” page? Those pages are called “Broken or Dead” pages while the link is also called “Broken or Dead” link.

Most people think that this is not a big deal but let me tell you that it’s more than big deal to your blog or Shopify SEO.

These dead links will be telling Google and other search engines that some of your pages are becoming irrelevant and are disrupting users (i.e., they are not providing any useful information again).

If google can detect a broken link on your page, they will start de-indexing those pages and thereby bringing problem upon your site SEO performance.

So, it’s better to make sure you avoid dead or broken links.

To avoid broken links, make sure you redirect (301 redirection) any of your deleted page to another page. This will also decrease the amount of people visiting your website or products’ pages and leaving immediately (also known as Bounce Rate).

If you found out that a link is broken or returns as “404 Error”, make sure you quickly disavow it. You can do so by making use of google search Console >> Crawl >> Links >> Fetch.

Follow this guide to how to optimize your website for SEO using Google Search Console.

10. Offline Brand Awareness

This is also important if you are thinking of boosting your Shopify website popularity, traffic and SEO.

I’m not talking about online marketing but offline marketing.

When we are talking about offline marketing, I guess you already know what I’m saying because you have seen it or patronized someone through it in one way or another.

This is what I’m saying, have you ever seen a banner, poster, handbill, complementary card, sticker, branded vest and so on…?

What do you think those things are used for?

They are used for marketing, brand awareness or traffic generation. If you see a well branded product or service, you will surely be tempted to buy or patronize it.

Same thing will happen if you start your own offline branding.

But how will this help your Shopify SEO?

First, it will increase your website traffic if you branded your website URL along.

And traffic from reliable source increases ranking because Google is going to believe that you are doing some useful and helpful. So they will have no choice than to show you some love.

Another thing is that you will keep getting returning visitors which is a sweet juice for your Shopify SEO practices.

In short, make use of offline branding to increase your SEO. You can start from branding a vest boldly with what you sells and a killer call to action words with your website URL.
